About Large Format Graphics

Large Format is a generic term that refers to the production of high resolution graphics to be printed on large size media, such as billboards, vehicle wraps, and large vinyl panels applied on walls, to replicate the appearance of a mural.

Vector graphics (i.e. Adobe Illustrator files), is the most common media used in large format designs, because it keeps the file size to a minimum, while retaining quality regardless of the resolution. With that said, it's not always possible to convert a rasterized artwork to a 100% vectorized design, and high-resolution photographic imagery is often used, where the resolution of the image isn't too low compared to the sharpness of the surrounding vector art.

Paneling & Linear Yield

Most common large format printers can print vinyi rolls as wide as 54 inches, with the exception of flatbed printers capable of printing on media that is well over that limitation. The trade-off is resolution, and the staggering cost of inks, which is why it's often more cost effective to "panel" artwork that is wider than 54 inches.

For instance, when wrapping a box truck in vynil graphics, the "linear yield", or the length of the vinyl roll of the printer, can be several hundred feet, but the width stays within 53-54 inches, depending on the average capability of the printer. This means that to cover an area that goes beyond that limitation, the artwork must be printed in separate pieces to be installed next to each other, to render the final design.

Artwork and Message

Designing for large format is almost always used in advertising, and it's very different from regular desktop publishing. Large format graphic tends to be very simplified and focused on one single call to action. This is because most artwork of this kind is displayed in places that must make the most of an audience with a very short attention span, such as motorists, and pedestrians, who are expected to grasp at least a fraction of a very simple message that is means to make a lasting impression.
